"There is virtue in work and there is virtue in rest. Use both and overlook neither" - Alan Cohen.
Throughout our hectic everyday lives, we often neglect our body's cries for rest. In fact, we sometimes have a tendency to lean towards activities that exhaust us more. It is safe to say that we all need to set aside time to unwind and loosen up a little. Contrary to popular belief, relaxing does not necessarily mean taking a weekend spa trip with friends or spending a few days on the sublime islands of Hawaii. De-stressing can occur in the comfort of your own home and in the simplest ways possible.

Food and drink. It is well acknowledged that green tea is the go-to tea for soothing yourself; or any herbal tea for that matter. However green tea in particular is a source of L-Theanine, which is a chemical that aids the body in relieving anger and stress. Honey in drinks, or simply alone, provides the body with compounds that reduce inflammation in the brain, which in turn combat depression, anxiety and stress. Although all fruits and vegetables prove assorted benefits to your body, mangoes especially are great. Not only can you imagine yourself in a tropical location from your own sofa, but mangoes are packed with a compound called linalool, which further helps to lower tension levels you may have. And the juice that drips down your chin? Don't worry about it, the stress relief is totally worth it.
Exercise. "But I'm too lazy for exercise!" you may complain. No, not the HIIT exercise that requires a crazy amount of energy and stamina. Peaceful, uncomplicated exercises such as yoga or walking. Yoga is a form of mental repose which improves your flexibility and liberate your mind. Practicing yoga daily for a minimum of 10 minutes will truly start to show changes for the better, in your mind and mentality. Another effortless method of exercise is walking. When you feel like everything is too much and overwhelming go for a stroll outside. You have the chance to spend some time alone and the fresh air will aid you in gathering your thoughts together and beat any worries you may have.
Practise your breathing. There is honestly not a more straightforward way to relax. Taking slow, deep breaths helps to lower the heart rate and blood pressure. The fuller your breaths are, the more energy your body will have. Deep breaths also relieve stress and tension. An effective method that has proven to improve your breathing technique is meditating. A short five to ten minutes is sufficient to free your mind. All you need is a comfortable, tranquil place where you can solely focus on your breathing and relax yourself.
Sleep. Adequate sleep is the right path for a healthy lifestyle, benefiting your heart, mind and many more. Sleeping for a decent amount of hours depending on your age, temporarily vacates your mind of worries that may have been floating about. Upon waking up, you will feel revitalised and prepared to start the day right. Power naps last usually a maximum of an hour, and are proven to be successful in relaxing the body and making you much more energised.
Entertain yourself. With the bustling lives we lead, it is often too easy to forget to set aside time in which you can fully enjoy yourself. Effortless activities including listening to your favourite song or completing a crossword can actually de-stress you, usually without you knowing. Listening to a great song can instantly uplift your mood. Brain games require a lot of energy, and have the power to take your mind off whatever is worrying you. Take your pick, and make sure you truly delight in it.
